What is Medicaid ?
It is a joint federal and state program that provides health coverage to Children, pregnant women, seniors, and individuals with some defined disabilities. It is the largest source of health coverage in the United States.
Some examples of individuals who are eligible:
If one gets Supplemental Security Income (SSI),
Individuals with certain disabilities.
Adults without Dependent Children.
Deemed Newborns.
Aged Blind or Disabled (AABD)
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Program.
Pregnant Women with income up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level.
Medicaid Spend Down
Spend down programs may also be called “excess income programs or “medically needy programs”.
A Medicaid spend down is the term used when someone who has income above the Medicaid limit and he spends that excess income on medical expenses. They also qualify for Medicaid.
When you apply for medical assistance, your income and resources are compared to limits set by the State.
When someone apply for medical assistance through Medicaid then their income and resources are compared to limits set by the State.
The amount your spenddown depends on three things:
1. The number of people in your household.
2. The amount of countable income your household has.
3. The medical program for which you are eligible.
